Sildenafil nitrate is a compound on which a group of pharmaceutical chemists working at Pfizer in a research facility in England back in 1994; studied it for use in hypertension and angina pectoris (reduced blood supply to heart muscle), later in the clinical trial it was observed that it had very little effect on angina but it could induce marked penile erections. Sensing an opportunity Pfizer therefore decided to market it as a remedy for erectile dysfunction and patented it in 1996. Later it was approved for use by United States food and Drug Administration in 1998 becoming the first oral treatment for erectile dysfunction and it soon became a huge success; where it sales between 1999-2001 exceeded $1 billion. Though in 2000 its global market share in prescribed erectile dysfunction pills was 92 percent but later with the emergence of other brands and some other factors it fell to 52 percent in 2007. The Pfizer’s patent on Sildenafil nitrate will expire in 2011-13.
